Different When It's Silent, without leaving his Bristol DNA behind.
The legendary Bristol producer has released his new album, Different When It's Silent, through his False Idols label on 17 July. Before it arrived, he shared "I'm Yours", a track that perfectly distils the sonic world he has inhabited for three decades.
For this record, Tricky relies almost entirely on fellow Bristolian Mitch Sanders, who appears on 13 of its 14 songs. Sanders is the ideal counterweight to Tricky's dark, whispered cadence, bringing a fragility that intensifies the album's claustrophobic atmosphere.
On "I'm Yours", that unmistakable Bristol sound returns: deep bass, dense atmospheres and minimalist percussion, with a bass line that inevitably recalls “Faith” by The Cure. Yet the homage becomes something entirely its own.
Lyrically, the song walks the fine line between love and possession. Through the hypnotic repetition of “I'm yours, you're mine”, Tricky and Sanders explore dependency, taking on someone else's problems as your own, and a total surrender that borders on obsession. It is dark, intimate and unmistakably Tricky.
