M83 will release I Wrote You a Letter on September 25 through Other Suns. The announcement arrives with “Blister Sunrise”, the first single from a nine-track album and Anthony Gonzalez’s first since Fantasy (2023).
There is more behind the news than another comeback. Gonzalez began building the record from demos recorded in the summer of 2024, intending to recover the immediacy of early M83: bedroom work, imperfections and creative freedom without expectations. He puts it plainly: he wanted something “less calculated, more spontaneous. More punk, in a way.”
“Blister Sunrise” supports that sonic argument. It does not chase another synth-pop flash: it raises a mass of guitars and synthesisers, lets distortion take ground and turns M83’s familiar cinematic scale into something rougher. The crescendo eventually opens into a bare piano, as if the song were dismantling its own monumentality.
The album reunites Gonzalez with Benoît de Villeneuve, a collaborator linked to the Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts era, and also features Joe Berry and Clément Libes. The connection to M83’s past works here not as a nostalgic reconstruction but as a way to recover method and risk.
