Bloc Party are back with their seventh studio album, Anatomy of a Brief Romance, released on 11 September through Contagious Music. A concept album produced by the legendary Trevor Horn (Grace Jones, Pet Shop Boys, Frankie Goes To Hollywood).
As a final preview, the London band released “Lagoon Blue” on 8 September. It is not a previously unreleased song: it is a reimagining of “Blue”, a track that appeared on their 2023 EP The High Life, then produced by Charlie Andrew.
Where the original was bright and self-contained, this version is more luxurious and expansive.
As Kele Okereke himself has explained, it was the first song they wrote for the new record, in the heady rush of falling in love again. A joy that soon fractured.
“It’s a song about feeling that love had come back into my life when I thought it was no longer possible,” he confessed. “I couldn’t sing it every night knowing how it all ended. The only way to make it work was to tell the whole story, where ‘Lagoon Blue’ is just one heartbeat, not the whole story.”
